The type of jade found in Guatemala is available in few other places around the world. It is the rare and beautiful jade called Jadeite, the same gem that had been prized above all other material goods centuries ago first by the Olmec and then by the Maya cultures. It is harder, denser, polishes better, and comes in more vivid colors than Nephrite, the other gem called jade. The colors of jadeite found in Guatemala range from a translucent white, through every shade of green to black, being white and black scarce and much sought after. There are special jades like pyrite jade (jade with incrustations of iron pyrite also known as fool's gold), translucent greens, blues, whites and grays, purple, rainbow colored, and imperial green.
